How It Began - A Traveler's Journey
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."
— Saint Augustine
This quote by Saint Augustine first resonated with me at the age of 12, and looking back on my many travel adventures, I wholeheartedly agree. My experiences have certainly shaped me into a 'man of the world.' But what good is knowledge and insight if I don't share them with others?
My journey began with a trip to London, where I intended to spend six months as a casual worker. Admittedly, I was a clueless traveler nearly 40 years ago. Free at last and eager to explore, I stepped off the plane at Heathrow, only to realize that London in February is not quite the same as Durban. The cold was a shock! I often wonder if the passersby were admiring my tan or puzzled by my shorts and flip-flops.
During that time, I started keeping a diary of my experiences, a habit that has stuck with me. My early entries were filled with cheer and optimism, which gradually gave way to the realities of endless rain. I didn't last the intended 6 months.
Reading - 'The Theatre of the Mind'
About 25 years ago, I began writing short stories about my adventures, including a hijacking in the Venezuelan jungle and my collection of near-death experiences. Recently, I took the plunge into writing novels and other books.
For me, travel and writing are intertwined. They complement each other, or at least they did before the age of technology and Instagram. Growing up without a TV, reading was my primary form of entertainment. My literary journey began with Charles Dickens' 'A Tale of Two Cities' at the age of 10, and I quickly became hooked.
My curiosity led me to explore travelogues, essays, and novels by authors like Ernest Hemingway, Paul Theroux, and Jane Austen. While I don't aspire to emulate these greats, I share their passion.
My Passion for Writing
Writing is not only enjoyable and therapeutic for me, but it also provides a sense of accomplishment, allowing me to express my thoughts and feelings. The world is a mosaic of diverse people and tastes, and I hope that some of you reading this will turn your passion into a career. Readers are leaders.
While money is important, pursuing your passion will enrich your life in countless ways. With courage, fortitude, and patience, you can do it! Go forth and conquer!
